In what some are calling the most thrilling game of 2025’s postseason, the Tigers-Mariners went into 15 innings before ultimately ending up in the Tigers October coming to an end on a Jorge Polanco walk off winner to send the Seattle faithful home happy.
2022 MLB Postseason Rematch: Seattle Mariners vs Toronto Blue Jays
In 2022, the Seattle Mariners made the postseason for the first time in 21 years. That same year, they swept the Blue Jays to advance to the ALDS. Luis Castillo threw a gem in game 1, and then the Blue Jays bullpen gave up a 7 run lead which enabled the Mariners to sweep the Blue Jays to head to the next round. These are two very different teams now, however.
Seattle Mariners vs Toronto Blue Jays: 2025 Edition
In the 2025 ALCS, the Seattle Mariners’ pitching staff could effectively silence the Toronto Blue Jays’ lineup by leveraging their deep rotation and lockdown bullpen to exploit Toronto’s vulnerabilities against elite velocity and command. Anchored by ace Bryan Woo’s stellar 2.94 ERA over 186.2 innings and Logan Gilbert’s stingy 3.44 mark with 11.9 strikeouts per nine, the Mariners starters—fresh off limiting opponents to a team 3.85 ERA and 1.20 WHIP—have already shown they can tame Toronto’s bats, surrendering just five earned runs in 11 2/3 combined frames during the regular season.
Luis Castillo’s vet status (3.54 ERA) would further neutralize threats like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (.292 average, 23 homers) and Bo Bichette (.311, 18 homers), while George Kirby’s plus-plus control disrupts George Springer’s scorching .309 clip and 32 long balls. Backed by a bullpen boasting Andrés Muñoz’s 1.73 ERA and 38 saves, plus setup men like Eduard Bazardo (2.52 ERA), Seattle could induce whiffs from a Jays offense that, despite a respectable .759 OPS and 170 homers, ranked mid-pack in strikeouts and faltered against top-tier staffs all year. If the Mariners echo their postseason so far—advancing past Detroit in a thriller—this formula could render Toronto’s 745 runs a distant memory, silencing the Rogers Centre, which plays out to be one of Toronto’s biggest strengths, a whopping 54-27 home record. We don’t think this will end up like 2022’s results.
Division Dugout’s Prediction
We have the Toronto Blue Jays winning this series in 6. That offense is still cruising too good to make us think that the Seattle Mariners will be able to hold them back with that excellent pitching staff. IF the Seattle Mariners win, we will be cheering them on, it’s always exciting seeing teams that ‘went for it’ at the trade deadline be rewarded in October for those efforts.
